Founded in 1969, Community Development Inc./Child Development Centers (CDI) now operates 139 centers throughout the State of California, serving over 20,000 children, birth through twelve years of age. Their programs serve children and families who qualify for State subsidies through the California Department of Education, Early Learning and Care Division, as well as private fee-paying families. Several CDI centers attended the Teaching Pyramid Training in Ventura County in the 2012-13 program year.
Harrington CDC in Oxnard joined the Partner Site Program in the 2013-14 program year and has been recognized as a Mentor Classroom–a classroom operating with measured fidelity to the Teaching Pyramid framework. This teaching and center team has made unique contributions to Teaching Pyramid implementation through their creative use of Teaching Pyramid strategies. For example, they use a whiteboard to draw cartoon reminders regarding the Program-wide Expectations in collaboration with the children at circle, developed a sequenced-transition approach that results in quick transitions and more time in learning activities, created a parent info sheet that helps them build relationships with children and families, and set up an environment that includes rich visual supports while maintaining an emphasis on the use of natural materials.
